Chewing, swallowing, phonation, posture

What is Gnathology?

Gnathology is a fairly recent branch of dentistry that studies the physiology, pathology, and functions of the jaw (chewing, swallowing, phonatory, postural).

It analyzes the relationships between the jaws, the teeth, the two temporomandibular joints, the muscles that move the jaws, and the nervous system that controls those muscles, including the tongue.

How can we help you?

Our experts can help you with the main consequences related to gnathology:

  • bruxism: also called grinding, is excessive activity of the muscles that move the jaw. The most common form of this condition is clenching, that is, prolonged contact of the two dental arches;
  • jaw locking: that is, difficulty for the patient to open the mouth due to a blockage of the condylar-discal mechanism that allows the mouth to open;
  • tinnitus: what we call ringing or buzzing in the ears can result from bruxism and clenching of the teeth;
  • headaches: severe migraines and muscle-tensive headaches.

Condition for referral to the specialist in Orthognathic orthodontics
(Dr. Alessandro Rossi):

first make sure that there are no inflammatory diseases of the mouth, teeth and gums.

Therefore, the first visit should be carried out with the dentist (Dr. Simone Kravos or Dr. Francesco Guadagno) to diagnose and treat any foci that might otherwise interfere with and affect the results of the gnathological examination. The initial treatment plan at the end of any dental treatment will include the specialist visit for gnathological and postural evaluations of the case.
